Description

This listing is for 14g of Mammoth Grey Stripe Sunflower Seeds.  Non-genetically modified seed.  These are our extra seeds from this season.  We buy in small bulk lots, use what's needed for family, friends, and small co-ops, then sell the remainder at a substantial discount for other growers.  All seed lots have been tested for viability.  This variety has been trialed from several sources to ensure the selection of the best strain.  All extra seeds are professionally packaged and labeled.  Free USPS First Class shipping to the lower 48.

120 days to maturity.  Make a statement in the garden this season with this traditional variety of giant (usually 6–12') single-stem sunflower.  Mammoth Grey grows 8-12' tall with extra-larger seed heads.  The one to grow if you want to eat the seeds, plant a maze, or create a privacy screen.  Massive seed heads beloved by both birds and kids.  Annual.  Especially attractive to pollinators.  A bit smaller than Giganteus, but stands more upright.

We wanted to add a splash of color to the farm this season.  You can't help but smile when you see a sunflower so we decided on those.  And we never knew how many different varieties exist; there will be a lot of smiles  🙂  Our supplier said sunflowers were the first to sell out last season and we placed an early order to buy many different varieties.  We still weren't quick enough and lost out on some.  But we'll be trying at least a half-dozen or more varieties on the farm and friends and neighbors will trial the rest.  We're adding two edible-seed varieties and the remainder will be for cut flowers.  The deer really do a number by us so the sunflowers will have to be behind the fence with the raised beds.  I'll update this listing with pics as they grow.  Pics in the listing are from our supplier and used with permission.  Good luck!

From our supplier:

Easy to grow. Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost at temperatures of 65–75° or direct sow after frost, 3 to a pocket. Thin to best plant, 1' or more apart.  Rich friable soil yields tallest plants; drought stunts growth.  Will readily self-sow; for some fun leave a few volunteers in strategic locations.

Sunflowers will grow in just about any well-drained soil, and they are drought tolerant.  To grow sunflowers from seed, to grow really big plants with really big flowers, enrich the soil with organic matter and incorporate 2 cups of complete organic fertilizer per 10′ of row, and irrigate regularly.  When the plants are 12" tall, dissolve 1 tsp of borax (for boron) in 12 fl oz of water and spread the solution over 15′ of row.  Be careful not to over-apply this solution. This application of boron will produce big seeds and flower heads. Do not apply boron to other garden plants.  Produces annual flowers that can grow to incredible heights in just one season.

Shipping and Combined Shipping

NYCfigs ships on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

We never 'pass the savings' of expensive shipping charges to the customer and always ship as economically as possible.  Sometimes this becomes a juggling act between cost-of-goods vs. cost-of-container vs. shipment size vs. shipping cost vs. margins.  With combined shipping, it's all in the packing and we'll always find the most inexpensive shipping method available.  But there are times when it's impossible to ship economically and we'll always let you know before paying.  The shipping for all items sold by NYCfigs will combine automatically with all other items purchased from NYCfigs.  Items that ship free can't be discounted.  In the rare instance of excess shipping charges, NYCfigs will refund after the invoice is paid.  This ensures your items are received in a timely manner.
